Garden centre sales up 4 per cent in week to 11 August

Garden centre sales were up four per cent in the week to August 11 against the same week in 2012, according to figures supplied to Horticulture Week.

Furniture was up 50 per cent, sundries was up three per cent, clothing was up 12 per cent, craft was up eight per cent, houseplants were up five per cent, and outdoor plants were up 15 per cent.

Aquatics was down two per cent, books were down four per cent,  food was down two per cent, gifts were down three per cent, pets were down two per cent and catering was down seven per cent.

In its latest monthly analysis, Barclaycard found that garden centres, pubs and restaurants, and DIY stores benefited from a 4.8 per cent rise in total spending in July.

GCA figures show sales were up 17.5 per cent in July.
