38 Degrees campaigns on a range of issues. Each week 50,000 members, chosen at random, are asked to vote for their top priorities; only those issues where there is a strong consensus will be pushed forward.
Funding comes from small individual donations.
Campaigning techniques include both online methods, such as mass email, social media, and online petitions, and offline methods, such as calling an MP.
38 Degrees' Nat Whalley said the organisation hopes to fund £20,000 of scientific research from Professor Dave Goulson at Sussex University and will launch the idea to members this week.
Friends of the Earth’s Paul de Zylva said the issue needed urgent attention and had been tackled in the USA.
