Fresh produce helps boost UK organic sales by 5.6 per cent

New market research unveiled today (13 September) by the Soil Association shows an increased rate of growth in the organic market.

Soil Association Certification business development director Clare McDermott said: "The organic market is in the fourth consecutive year of growth against continuing decline in non-organic food sales. There are clear opportunities across a variety of sectors, with growth driven by fresh produce and grocery, but also home baking and store cupboard essentials."

The proportion of households which have bought organic in the last year now stands at 83 per cent, while organic market is set to break the £2 billion mark this year, the research found.

The association said at its annual Organic September trade briefing that having gathered more in-depth research into organic consumers' shopping habits, it will streamline the organic message to "make organic the everyday choice for everybody".

Presenting the new research, founder of The Crow Flies marketing consultancy David Preston said: "If we can understand the range of segments and motivations of organic consumers, we will be able to grow the organic market and consistently communicate the rich tapestry of what organic is. But this has to be supported throughout the industry."
