Flowering Plants owner Francis Richardson said: "He was a talented engineer, with a wide client base who sought innovative solutions to handling problems.
"He first came to my notice as the inventor of a compost mixer with what was then a unique, twin-rotor system. These became very popular because they did not destroy the structure of growing media, or produce mud balls. "He also produced the first system of linked conveyors for handling pot plants, the first really effective fully automatic transplanting machine for liners and an effective system for cleaning root and bulb crops without wasting water: the list goes on."
He is survived by his widow Janet, their daughters and grandchildren.
