Restaurant critic Jay Rayner has criticised a leading restaurant that features on a new Channel 5 TV series as being like a "cheap garden centre café’.
The Guardian writer described Mr Cooper’s House and Garden at the Midland Hotel in Manchester as looking like a garden centre cafe in Droitwich.
He said: "This is a grand old hotel space with high, vaulted ceilings and fine, grandiose columns. It has been made to look like a cheap garden centre café in Droitwich."
He added: "It isn’t in poor taste. It’s a total taste bypass."
Garden centre cafe consultant Chris Brown, of Turpin Smale, who is speaking at the HTA Catering Conference on 9-10 June, said: "I'm sure wonderful things will be said about fresh food at the conference but my main topic is about getting the ambience right. Garden centres often have horrific ambience in their seating areas."
