The former Wyevale Garden Centres chief executive told HW he will use the template he employed to turn around Wyevale if he is successful in taking over Homebase, which could be sold by owner Home Retail Group (HRG) next year. Marshall's method is to improve garden centres, catering and concessions.
He said: "There's no doubt about it, I'm interested in it. I'm interested in the space and you can imagine with my background what I would keep in that space.
"Wyevale was on the floor and I turned it around and I’ve no doubt I can do that again with Homebase with a formula somewhat similar to the one I used for Wyevale Garden Centres - garden centres, restaurants and concessions. It has a similar space."
HRG issued a profit warning in November and has seen its share price fall sharply.
