There have been a number of interesting technical developments which have impacted commercial glasshouse production environments over the last 10 years. A number of these were initially focused towards use in the protected edible crops industry, however, some have potential relevance in other areas of the horticultural industry too. Light manipulation, via the use of new types of glass and plastic, glass and plastic coatings, screens and other materials to diffuse light, are such an example.
This study tour to The Netherlands (as part of AHDB Horticulture funded Project PO 019 ‘The Bedding and Pot Plant Centre – new product opportunities for bedding and pot plant growers’) has been designed to explore the various ways that diffuse light can benefit a range of different horticultural crops including ornamentals, protected edible crops and protected soft fruit in terms of improved plant quality, plant habit manipulation, yield, scheduling and extended productivity.
