Espley pleased with Squire's 2012 performance

Squires MD Dennis Espley says he is happy with the garden centre company's results, which show sales were up 10 per cent to £36.6m in 2012.

He said: "Considering such a difficult spring, and one off costs we are quietly pleased."

The 14-centre Squires added three Shoots centres during 2011, contributing £5.9m to sales, while like-for-like performance at the existing centres dropped by 6.8 per cent because of bad weather.

Operating profit dropped by 13 per cent to £2.8m, hit by spending on redevelopments and head office.

Catering topped £5m.

Staff numbers rose from 559 to 690.

Espley said plans for the current year include a refurbishment at Twickenham, and an extension of the Woking centre.
