Efco 137, 141S and 141SP

Efco tells us the 137 and 141 chainsaws are designed to meet the needs of demanding home users who want a tool suitable for lopping and pruning jobs, felling small trees and cutting up firewood. But these saws incorporate much of the technology of bigger, more powerful saws and offer a performance at the top of their class. We reckon professionals might want to take a closer look.
They may be sub-40cc domestic saws, but what we like about them is their sheer simplicity and ease of use. We recognise that not everyone in our industry uses chainsaws every week, let alone every day. But, if you are a garden maintenance contractor or tending a large garden or small estate, these saws could be ideal.
All three models incorporate easy starting via a digital coil with electronic control to reduce the pull-start effort and ensure the engine fires at a lower rpm — but the 141SP also has “Easy-on” starting to reduce kickback. All the saws include a five-point anti-vibration system to separate the engine from the handles.
Overall, we prefer the 141SP. Everyone likes the choke on it because you don’t need to get both your finger and thumb on it. Instead of a pull or flick switch, this is a rocker switch that incorporates the on/off, choke and half-throttle control.
The aluminium oil pump, with adjustable oiler, allows for variation of the feed to suit the type of use, and so economises on lubricant. We also prefer the side-tensioning system on the 141SP. No tools are needed to remove the cover, and underneath we find a generously proportioned nylon air filter and easy access to the spark plug.
