Eden Project aims to enrich visitor experience with iPhone app

Eden Project has launched its first iPhone app, called the Insider Guide, to help visitors around the lunar-type landscape with biomes.

The Insider Guide costs £2.99 from the Apple App Store and includes an interactive map to help visitors explore parts of Eden. It signposts plants, children’s attractions, sculptures, restaurants and quiet spots and users can zoom inside the biomes.

"Information is updated each day so visitors," said digital editor Nina Whitby. "Bridging the gap between digital and physical, users of the app can take a photo to create a real-life postcard with a personal message."

Other features include a QR reader allowing visitors to scan tagged plants and attractions to discover more about them. Audio stories include tales from the Eden team on current projects.

"We want to enrich people’s visit with extra information to help plan the trip, but also to provide something useful to delve into back at home." said Whitby, whose team were helped by digital agencies Make it Digital and Make it Clear.

The Insider Guider works on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S running iOS 4.3 or later. It is not currently compatible with iPad. Since opening in 2001, nearly 14m people have visited Eden and it has generated £1.2bn for the local economy.
