The panel is made up of AHDB levy payers who develop and maintain a research strategy covering produciton of apples, pears, plums, cherries, nuts and other tree fruits in the UK.

Saunders has also been awarded the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers' Fruit Culture Award for "exceptional communication and technology transfer" on many aspects of fruit growing in the UK. The award is presented each year at the National Fruit Show, held last week in Kent.

Prior to Hutchnisons he worked as an agronomist for Ribena owners GSK and Suntory, when he represented the blackcurrant industry on AHDB-funded research.
