This garden on the fringes of Richmond Park in Greater London underwent a transformation from an expanse of lawn with a couple of sheds and an old terrace to an attractive space for family enjoyment. The finished garden has something for everyone, including a large lawn, a putting green and a gym/studio to the rear.

The main focus of the hard landscaping revolves around a paved terrace area close to the house encompassing a built-in barbecue and a fireplace feature. Grey sawn York stone was used to construct the terrace. Recycled paving was used to provide paths around the gym.

The health and vigour of the planting is aided by the addition of well-rotted manure and the installation of a drip-irrigation system. Strategic lighting brings the garden into use during the hours of darkness.

The judges noted: "The presence of a badger set in the neighbours’ garden required close liaison between the contractor and the local environmental officer as well as the installation of cameras, slightly delaying the scheme. A lot of requirements have been met in this relatively small space, including an entertaining area complete with outdoor kitchen and bioethanol fire, a children’s area and a home gym. The faultless installation of grey York stone paving complements the modern house, as does the use of slate veneer and grey planters. The clients and their children are delighted with the result."
