Dobbies reveals 13.5% rise in sales

Strong year for Dobbies as plans for internet expansion gather speed.

Dobbies has reported a 13.5 per cent increase in sales to £68.8m in the year ending 31 October. Like-for-like sales were up 1.9 per cent, while the company’s pre-tax profit was £5.4m, up 13.1 per cent. Chief executive James Barnes said: “These are good results achieved against a background of often difficult trading conditions. We’re putting in place the building blocks that will allow us to raise the growth rate of the business over the coming years.” Construction of two stores at Dunfermline and Sheffield is under way. The company will also expand internet business Groveland, which it bought in 2006. Barnes said: “We feel there’s a lot of potential for building a big gardening community site that helps the e-tailing but also helps the Dobbies brand development. All these things have the potential to drive people to the site and to our physical sites and build the Dobbies brand.”
