Digital map helps Cambridge's tree officers do their job

A digital map of trees is being used to determine planting and management across an historic city and save money.

Tree officers at Cambridge City Council used the technology to work out which trees existed and give pointers on future planting needs.

Bluesky, which supplied the ProximiTREE map, said it was drawn from aerial photographs and included information on tree height and canopy extent.

Tree officer Matthew Magrath said: "To determine the most appropriate areas for planting we had to know what we already had.

"The new data gives us detailed information to make decisions on management."

Fellow tree officer Kenny McGregor added: "This could give us the information needed to encourage community groups to undertake planting initiatives."

Bluesky managing director Rachel Tidmarsh said the service's cost depended on the size of the area mapped.
