The Queen is to cut the ribbon to open Kathryn Gustafson’s memorial fountain to Diana Princess of Wales.
The official inauguration ceremony in Hyde Park will take place in July. The £3 million design includes a moat that hugs the contours of the park, which is shallow enough for children to paddle in.
Gustafson’s feature will be illuminated at night, there will be a pond and streams on either side of the moat.
Gustafson’s competition winner was chosen from thousands of schemes but has hit controversy. Frances Shand Kydd, Diana’s mother, criticised the design for lacking grandeur and a frosty tension has divided the royal family from the Spencers.
The fountain ceremony will be the first official public engagement taken by the two families since Diana’s funeral in 1997.
