Defra to review policies

Phytophthora ramorum policies are under review by Defra after the industry has suffered years of problems from the disease.

A Defra representative said: "We are in the process of putting together a proposal to ministers for a public consultation on future Phytophthora policy. This will include one or more public meetings as part of the consultation process. Timing is not yet determined but (it) should be later this year - probably during the summer. There is no intention to hold a meeting of interested parties before then." Rhododendron grower John Middleton said: "It seems there is going to be a complete review. Defra can't carry on in the same way forever."
