Defra calls for evidence on flood resilience

Defra is calling for evidence for its national flood resilience review, as a new report warns flood damages will be five times as bad by 2050.

This call for evidence focuses on the need to carry out an assessment of the damage that extreme rainfall could cause across England.

It follows a report from the European Environment Agency showing damages caused by annual flooding across Europe are set to increase five-fold by 2050 and will be 17 times as bad by 2080. This winter's flooding has already cost the UK more than £5bn.

Calls have been growing for extensive tree planting and changes in farming practice to mitigate flooding in the UK, while the Landscape Institute says solutions must be landscape-led.

Submitted evidence must already be available in published form and is due by 4 March. Further information is available from the Government website.
