Customers want local produce

Ninety-six per cent of traders based at New Covent Garden Market say demand for local or British produce has increased, a survey commissioned by the market has revealed.

The Local Food Study, conducted by independent food consultant Sally Scantlebury of Feast, investigated changing attitudes towards trading in UK produce.

It showed that most demand for local produce is coming from the food service sector and so it recommended that wholesalers, distributors and chefs increase their visits to growers - and vice versa.

Scantlebury said: "There is growing awareness of the importance of re-connecting local production and consumption ... local production emerged as the leading category that consumers actively support."
