Concessions prosper at garden centres

Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Fishkeeper Scotland open, while Joules reports increased revenues.

Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group is opening a new outlet at the Blackdown Garden Centre, West Buckland, Somerset bringing 12 new jobs to the area. The retailer has more than 60 concessions in garden centres.

The new store will also feature Ponden Home Interiors and Peacocks.

Another garden centre concession Joules to the year ending 29 May saw revenue £15m up to £131m. Joules is in more than 80 garden centres including Wyevale, Dobbies, Frosts and Haskins.

Colin Porter, chief executive, said it was "a transformational year in the development and expansion of the Joules brand".

In May, the company listed its shares on London's junior stock exchange market Aim.

Sales on-line grew 17.3 per cent and 13.1 per cent in-store helped by the opening of 10 new shops.

Meanwhile, Fishkeeper Scotland, partof Maidenhead Aquatics, has opened at Dobbies Garden Centre Melville, is the company’s second in Edinburgh, and its ninth in Scotland.

St Peter’s Garden Centre in Worcestershire and Checketts Fine Foods has worked together to open a food hall at the garden centre.
