Are there any companies that manufacture a pedestrian flail mower?

Makita offers the FLG500 self-propelled flail mower. It has a 5.5hp Honda engine and 24 flails to give a 50cm cutting width. It is quite a beast, weighing in at 99kg. Height of cut is adjustable from 80mm to 20mm. The list price is currently £2,526 ex VAT.

Two models of pedestrian flail mower are offered by Tracmaster of Burgess Hill, West Sussex. The SM50 is a compact machine, powered by a 6.5hp Honda petrol engine and designed for cutting long grass and brush. It has a cutting head with 24 swinging "Y" blades mounted on a large axle. The list price is £1,699 ex VAT.

If you want something more productive, Tracmaster's SM80 gives an 80cm cut with a 13hp Honda engine. A heftier machine, it is fitted with steering brakes for manoeuvrability and has a locking differential to cope with difficult terrain. Cut height is 80mm down to 30mm. Expect to pay around £3,950 ex VAT.

If you also need to mow with a rotary from time to time, the Ferris Dual Drive might be useful. Supplied in the UK by IPU Group in the West Midlands, it is offered in two versions, powered by either a 19hp or 25hp Kawasaki engine.

This mower is available with a 48in (122cm) or 52in (132cm) rear- or side-discharge rotary deck, but a 36in (91cm) flail head is available as an option. Other features include hydrostatic transmission and pneumatic front and rear turf tyres. The latest models have Comfort Control, with electronic sensing OPC and single hand-wheel height adjuster.

The SWZ Safety Mulcher from Simon Tullett Machinery, offered in 36in (91cm) and 40in (102cm) cutting widths, allows the advantages of the Humus Mulching System to be harnessed by users of Scag SWZ pedestrian mowers. The Humus system features a milling/cutting action, running at 4,800rpm, to mulch tough vegetation. The decks are interchangeable with standard Scag rotary decks, so one power unit could be used to drive two different applications.

If you could use extra versatility, another solution may be a two-wheeled tractor. A lot of these, including the SEP models from Bunce (Ashbury), Ferrari units from Kilworth and Tracmaster's BCS tractors, can be fitted with flail decks. The advantage is the ability to power implements for soil cultivation, sweeping, snow clearance and even shredding, chipping and log splitting.
