Clegg demands answers on Sheffield's tree felling "scandal"

Former LibDem leader and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg has written to the leader of Sheffield City Council to protest at what he describes as the "national scandal" of the city's street tree felling programme.

In an e-mail to council leader Julie Dore, the Sheffield Hallam MP also challenges the council to show the cost breakdown behind its "wildly implausible" claim that it would cost £26m to stop tree felling and preserve the trees.

"When I helped to secure the £1.2billion of Government money to fix Sheffield's roads, no one expected that money to be used by Sheffield City Council to chop down hundreds of healthy mature roadside trees against the wishes of the public," the email says.

"This project was meant to be good news for Sheffield but under your watch this has become a national scandal."

It also accuses the council of ignoring "countless protests and petitions", adding: "It has taken a High Court injunction brought by Sheffield residents to force the Council to stop and think about its actions."

It adds that the council's bid to fight the injunction will "waste a considerable amount of tax payer's money".
