Charlton opens tribute garden

A memorial garden has been opened at Charlton Athletic FC's Sparrows Lane training ground to mark the 10th anniversary of young player Pierre Bolangi's death.

The garden features a specially commissioned bronze bust of the 17-year-old who drowned in a pre-season training accident in Aldershot on 9 August 2000.

Charlton's former chief executive Peter Varney said: "The club has ensured that a fitting memorial was built in memory of Pierre at the east London cemetery where he is buried.

"Now, thanks to the generosity of Charlton supporters, this tribute of a memorial garden at the workplace he loved has become a reality on the 10th anniversary of his untimely passing."
