Eight candidates from across the UK are on the programme, which is for new managers, or experienced managers who have had little previous training.
Consultant Anne Martins is running the 11-day programme, which is endorsed by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM).
Candidates have now completed the first three modules, which have covered personal effectiveness, learning styles and time management, business vision, strategy, change management, marketing, leadership, motivation and managing performance. Future sessions are planned on communication, influencing, employment law, diversity, team development, problem solving and conducting effective meetings.
Kris Douglas of Coolings Green & Pleasant Centre in Kent said: "This course is motivating me to make changes at work and to share my vision more with the team. I have learned more about teamwork with the course reminding me that we are all in it together."
Sue Preston of Fosseway Garden Centre in Gloucestershire said: "The programme has really made me think a lot about vision and encouraged me to focus on what the business is really about. This is an area I will take back and develop further in the business."
Gavin Cooper of Cranbourne Manor Garden Centre in Dorset added: "The marketing module has helped me to understand the all-encapsulating picture of marketing, rather than simply seeing it as advertising or merchandising."
HTA vice-president Carol Paris said: "Our managers are the guardians of our reputation and a very important part of our ongoing success. This course will equip our new managers with the skills that they need to get the best out of their teams and gain a full understanding of all aspects of retail management."
