The company, which sells topsoil as a by-product of its main business, supplied 240,000 tonnes to projects across the UK in the 2013/14 year and lays claim to being the UK’s biggest supplier. It sells two kinds of soil, Landscape20 and Sports10.

Topsoil manager Andy Spetch said; "Topsoil is the ultimate sustainable product. By recovering, screening and blending the rich arable soils that adhere to the 7.5 million tonnes of sugar beet, delivered by farmers to British Sugar’s UK factories, we are providing our landscaping, construction and amenity customers with a natural, consistent product that meets BS3882:2007.

"Our sales figures for the past 12 months speak for themselves; customers want to use sustainable products but not at the expense of quality, consistency and regulatory compliance."

British Sugar also recycles stones for building and lime for soil conditioning and 500,000 tonnes of animal feed is also produced from the sugar beet pulp.

Topsoil’s product is stored inside at the company’s four sugar factories, Bury St Edmunds, Cantley, Newark and Wissington.
