The EU's Eurostat data puts the UK well ahead of its nearest rivals Denmark and the Netherlands, only a quarter of whose populations meet the five-a-day target. At the other end of the scale, barely one Romanian in 30 meets the target.

Romania also has the highest share "not consuming fruit and vegetables on a daily basis" at nearly two-thirds of its population. More than one Briton in five does not eat fresh produce every day.

Britain also has the EU's greatest disparity of consumption between those at "high" and "low" education levels, with four in ten educated to tertiary level consuming five-a-day, compared to just a quarter among the least educated.

Figures for Ireland were not included in the report.
