Beatles' George Harrison 'like Capability Brown', says top designer

The Beatles' George Harrison was like Capability Brown in the way he perceived landscapes, according to leading designer Yvonne Innes.

George Harrison was able to see spaces and landscapes, and it was quite amazing and inspiring, said garden designer Yvonne Innes, who created the From Life to Life entry at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2008 dedicated to the Beatles musician.

In a way he was like Capability Brown. He spent hours in his garden re-arranging things.

Yvonne Innes was speaking about her work in George Harrison’s garden at Friar Park, Henley-on-Thames, as well as her design for RHS Chelsea during a BALI and Lantra landscaping industry day at Otley College yesterday (22 October).

George Harrison liked to plant in shady areas and loved using tree ferns; he also had a series of infinity pools that just fell into each other, she added.

Following work Yvonne Innes carried out at Friar Park, she decided to design an RHS Chelsea Show garden inspired by George Harrison’s life.

The From Life to Life garden was sponsored by Harrison's widow, Olivia Harrison and received a silver-gilt medal.
