Barbecue market potential boosts confidence at Weber

Weber managing director John Cooper said he is bullish about the future of barbecue sales Europe-wide in 2012.

"Europe is very undeveloped so we will be growing the market. It's not just a case of taking others' share. The potential is there just from teaching people to barbecue properly. That's why we do so much education.

"We're expecting the market to at least double in the next five-to-seven years in the UK and central Europe."

Drivers in the UK include staycationing and events such as the Olympics and the Queen's diamond jubilee.

Cooper said: "We are pleased with the pre-season so far. Retailers have to be ready for an early start. April was our best month of 2011.

"But the market is diverging. The top and bottom end are doing okay but the middle ground is being squeezed. That's typical in a recession."
