Awards honour industry's best

Hundreds of the best-known people in the growing industry gathered in London last Thursday for the Grower of the Year Awards 2008.

Hosted by Grower and HW, the event held at London's Royal Lancaster Hotel saw awards finalists, sponsors and many of the industry's top names enjoy a keynote speech by NFU vice-president Meurig Raymond before guest presenter Hazel Irvine of BBC Sport announced the winners.

The top of honour of Grower of the Year for edibles, picked from the winner of the top fruit, soft fruit, salads and vegetable grower of the categories, went to soft fruit grower AJ & CI Snell.

The awards continue to grow in prestige as the number of entrants this year increased by 60 per cent.

A panel of 12 judges with expertise across a variety of production and business areas were recruited to choose the finalists, winners and those runners up honoured with a "highly commended" accolade.
