Australian plants in Chelsea debut

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show will get a taste of flora and fauna from down under this year with an entry from Australian garden designer Jim Fogarty.

The Macquarie Group-sponsored "Australian Garden" is modelled on an 18ha design featuring Australian colours, textures, sounds and scents that is being developed at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne in Melbourne. That garden is set to open fully in 2012.

Fogarty's Chelsea show garden will incorporate more than 2,000 native Australian plants sourced by UK plant manager Crocus from specialist nurseries in Sicily and Spain. A selection of rare and threatened species will be included in the plant list, which will feature Queensland bottletree, firewheel, mountain hickory wattle, spinning gum, fragrant saltbush and hairy darling-pea.

A central water feature will represent the journey water has through the Australian landscapes and its relationship to the surrounding flora and fauna.
