They should be looking at promoting plants by "inviting customers to buy them", said FCH UK director Jo Reid.
He added: "We want to reinvigorate the garden centre houseplant area. It's never been very exciting because in the past all centres have done is sell plants as horticultural products. But most keen gardeners already understand about plants whereas centres are missing out on impulse 'stop, look and buy' shoppers, particularly women."
FCH will hold an event entitled Plants Are Lifestyle on 29 September at Fernhill Garden Centre in Athlone, Ireland, to show retailers how "positive and focused communication messages can really get sales of houseplants going".
