Asthma helped by blackcurrants

Researchers in New Zealand have found that eating blackcurrants may help asthma sufferers.

The scientists at Plant & Food Research isolated anti-epigallocatechin - an anti-inflammatory compound found in blackcurrants, which has the potential to help the lungs fight inflammation.

Preliminary results, published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, show that blackcurrants can help suppress the lungs' inflammatory reactions.

Scientists have long known that antioxidants from fruits and vegetables can reduce inflammation in the lungs, but could not explain how.

Lead researcher Dr Roger Hurst said: "Foods containing these compounds could provide more natural alternatives to assist conventional drug treatments for asthma and even other allergic reactions."
