The contract would cover grounds maintenance and horticulture across the seaside district's 240ha of parks and open spaces, including housing sites, amenity and sports areas, country parks and cemeteries.

Management of outdoor recreation areas will also be included, with the supplier to provide a cashier and booking service for sports sites. The supplier will be able to retain income from the public use of this service, and will be expected to put long-term investment into the facilities and commit to improving the council's leisure offer under the contract.

The winning supplier will also be required to repair and maintain play areas including skate parks and multi-use games areas, as well as maintaining and cleaning the buildings and facilities associated with the council's outdoor spaces.

ISS Facility Services Landscaping currently holds the council's parks contract - by the time it expires in 2017 ISS will have spent 23 years on the job. Play equipment maintenance has also been covered by Foster Playscapes, based in Sompting.

Historically Arun District Council has spent between £1.2m and £1.5m per annum on the services in the new contract, and it is expected the successful tender will come in under £1.5m per year.

The contract will commence on 1 Jan 2017 and expire in March 2027, with the option to extend a further five years.

Tenders are due 11 January - see for more information.
