Apple made to resist black spot

Scientists in Australia have developed a new variety of apple that they said is resistant to black spot. RS103-130 could now be trialled in the UK.

The scientists claimed that it can remain fresh and firm at room temperature for a week and be cold stored at 1 degsC for a period of around four months.

The variety has been developed by researchers at Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries (QPIF), a department of the Queensland government, which claims the fruit is suitable to growing areas worldwide.

A QPIF representative said: "The new variety has excellent consumer acceptability and strong resistance to the apple scab disease. Apple scab (black spot) is a major disease of apple foliage and fruit caused by the fungus Venturia inequalis throughout all major, apple growing areas."
