All-Party Parliamentary Gardening & Horticulture Group's Bob Russell in call for mandatory horticulture training for planning officers

All-Party Parliamentary Gardening & Horticulture Group vice-chairman Bob Russell has called for mandatory training in horticulture for local planning officers.

During a House of Commons debate Russell requested that secretary of state for communities and local government Hazel Blears launch the policy.

Russell also asked for a statement on the development of urban horticulture as a contribution towards climate change mitigation.

Parliamentary under-secretary Iain Wright responded that urban horticulture can have a "small-scale positive benefit".
