In spring the plant's shoots are chocolate brown to dark green. After midsummer's day, they turn bright red and keep on growing until late September.
Since the plant produces branches well, it develops into a good shrub in a short period of time. The branches remain bright red throughout the winter.
Brown Sugar is absolutely hardy and was submitted by Van Vliet New Plants from Stroe. The winner is Jan-Willem Wezelenburg from Hazerswoude, who also markets the plant. Brown Sugar is protected under plant breeding legislation.
This plant was one of the novelty plant selection entered into the Plantarium nursery show held in August 2017.
