Burgess Park Project Board has made its final deliberations on the proposals for the 50ha green space in the London Borough of Southwark.

The board — comprising senior council staff, the Greater London Authority and the New Deal for Communities — met on 28 October to discuss the plans from LDA Design and Gillespies.

Burgess Park was awarded £2m by Mayor of London Boris Johnson in his Priority Parks programme.  

£4m of match funding was awarded by the Aylesbury New Deal for Communities.

Gillespies designs include a public square, visitor centre, lake boardwalk and banning dogs from the park, with separate dog-only enclosures.

LDA Design plans to reflect the post industrial nature of the park in the use of materials including steel, concrete and timber. It plans to create landforms, remove redundant roads and improve the lake.

A total of 112 firms expressed an interest in the project, of which 25 submitted a formal tender to undertake the work.
