Lantra supports landscape careers events in Northern Ireland

By Magda Ibrahim Thursday, 09 July 2009

Lantra, the sector skills council for environmental and land-based industries, has supported a series of career days aiming to promote landscaping in Northern Ireland.

Run by the Department for Employment & Learning's Careers Services in Northern Ireland, the events aimed to raise awareness of landscaping among careers advisers.

More than 80 careers advisers from across Northern Ireland attended the events in Belfast and Maghera to learn first-hand about the professional career opportunities available.

Lantra's development manager for careers and employability Chris Catchpole said: "In Northern Ireland, the land-based sector employs over 63,000 people, which shows just how important the role of the sector is.

"Land-based and agricultural careers are perceived as being unfashionable and are not often promoted as a first career choice. However, the sector has made huge technical and scientific advances in recent years and the sector's development is going to be essential in providing a sustainable future for Northern Ireland."

Over the two days, advisers received insights into the career options available in the sector and had the opportunity to question the experts, including landscape contractors Colin Eve of Bloomingdale Nurseries and Michael Pollock of Beechill Landscapes.
