The organisations on this page will help you find out more about the particular area of horticulture that you are interested in, and what vacancies are available in it.
GENERAL
Horticulture Week is the only magazine covering the breadth of the UK horticulture industry. The weekly print magazine, available for subscription by calling 020 8606 7500, carries the widest selection of job vacancies in the industry. Many of these jobs, and others too, are listed on the web at www.horticulturejobs.co.uk.
The Horticultural Trades Association is the representative body for professional horticulture, and is a useful source of information on work-based training in particular. Call 0118 930 3132 or visit www.the-hta.org.uk.
The Royal Horticultural Society is the main UK body promoting gardening and horticulture to the general public. It runs courses and school education activities, as well as hosting events such as the annual Chelsea Flower Show and managing four garden properties - including Wisley in Surrey - which showcase the best in British horticulture. The Institute of Horticulture offers a range of careers advice, including continuing professional development. Call 020 7936 5957 or visit www.horticulture.org.uk.
Lantra is the Government's sector skills council for land-based industries, which includes horticulture. Among other things it helps set and promote qualifications. Call 0845 707 8007 or visit www.ajobin.com or www.lantracoursefinder.co.uk.
RETAIL
Wyevale is by some way the largest garden retailer in the UK. It has a dedicated careers website, www.wyevalecareers.co.uk. The second largest British chain, Dobbies, has also expanded since its takeover by Tesco - see www.dobbies.com/careers.aspx.
The largest independent garden centre group is Klondyke, which has outlets concentrated in Scotland and the north of England. See www.klondyke.co.uk/careers.
LANDSCAPE
The Landscape Institute is the chartered body for landscape architects and designers. Call 020 7299 4500, visit the Landscape Institute's careers portal www.iwanttobealandscapearchitect.com, or see www.landscapeinstitute.org/recruitment for vacancies.
The British Association of Landscape Industries represents professional landscape contractors. Its website also lists vacancies in the sector at www.bali.co.uk/jobshop.html, or call 0870 770 4971.
PARKS
GreenSpace promotes the role of parks in public policy. Its website lists some vacancies. Call 0118 946 9060 or visit www.green-space.org.uk/jobs.
The Royal Parks manages many of London's best-known parks including Hyde Park and Regents Park. It has its own apprenticeship programme, Grow in the Parks. See www.royalparks.org.uk/grow or call 020 7298 2119.
CABE Space, the government's adviser on public space, promotes investment in parks and green spaces - see its recently published Skills to Grow, available from www.cabespace.org.uk.
Your local council may also have a parks apprenticeship programme. If you don't know the name or contact details of your council, look on www.upmystreet.com/local/.
PRODUCTION
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) promotes careers in agriculture and horticulture to students as part of its Why Farming Matters campaign. See www.whyfarmingmatters.co.uk.
HISTORIC AND BOTANIC
The National Trust is a major employer of professional gardeners. It runs the three-year Careership scheme for trainee gardeners, as well as offering a wide range of volunteering opportunities in its properties. Call 01793 817400 or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk or www.ntjobs.org.uk.
The National Trust for Scotland is a separate charity looking after Scotland's heritage. It too runs a garden apprenticeship scheme, besides its highly respected specialist gardening course at Threave, Dumfries and Galloway. Occasional gardening vacancies also appear on its website. The Professional Gardeners' Guild represents gardeners in public and private gardens. It runs a traineeship programme for experienced gardeners, and publishes a quarterly journal, The Professional Gardener, and also a frequent Jobsheet for members. ARBORICULTURE
The Arboricultural Association is the main professional body for arborists, running courses and an approved contractor scheme. Call 01794 368717 or visit www.trees.org.uk/education.php.
GROUNDSMANSHIP
The Institute of Groundsmanship is the main industry body for grounds managers. It provides extensive training and publishes a monthly magazine, The Groundsman which, like its website, carries job vacancies. Call 01908 312511 or visit www.iog.org.
The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association is a separate organisation for the golfing world. It also provides training and is a source of job vacancies. Call 01347 833800 or visit www.bigga.org.uk.
