2012 Olympic site 'will meet deadline'

The site for the London Olympics is on track to meet its building deadlines despite contamination, its leaders have insisted in a glossy report peppered with figures but vague on key completion dates.

Demolish, Dig, Design, the 40-page update on 10 milestones set in 2007, looked at the Olympic Park, waterways, transport and Olympic Village included in the Lea Valley master-plan by EDAW.

"It is a challenging programme; to deliver a project twice the size of Heathrow's Terminal 5 in half the time," said John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). "The site, a contaminated industrial landscape, is being transformed into a blank canvas for the creation of Europe's largest urban park for 150 years."

Builders are excavating 1.5 million cubic metres of soil to form the landscape. About 2,000 newts have been relocated.

The report came out just before Christmas, the half-way point between publication of the 10 milestones last April and their completion deadline set by the ODA for this August's Beijing Olympics.
